Dearest Mercedes and stitchers,
I'm astonished to see all these replies in one day........ I'm also very happy since, by being Italian, I can understand most of your comments and I'm really touched by your kindness and lovely words.
THANKS !!!!!
I want to share a secret with you ………. this is the way to keep blogs vibrant and alive, and also make you feel special. I regret that I do not have much time to stay connected at the computer to follow blogs, but you and Mercedes deserve it!
This sewing bag is named Queen Sofia's Sewing Bag because Sofia is the name of my only daughter. I always loved this name because it means the one who knows, wise and full of wisdom. I also noticed in my life that people I met with this name were always kind and wise.
Now, about the sewing set: we were in Chicago, USA, a few months ago, and Sofia found a lovely book “Handbags – The Power of the Purse”, written by Anna Johnson. The bag of page 310 inspired my sewing bag, and even though fabric and materials are very different, its shape was definitely inspired by that bag.
Sofia is my precious queen, full or artistic taste and my budding designer with her Teen Stitch by Sofia” line of designs. I had to include her name in the sewing bag. Then I decided to give this piece a sort of antique and regal spirit, keeping also in mind that Sofia was also the name of famous Queens of past and actual times, like your Queen (by the way I love her family very much!). For this “noble” regal I planned to design a chatelaine.
For those of you who are not familiar with chatelaines, I will give you a short history of this dress accessory.
In the book “Ladies’ Dress Accessories” of Eleanor Johnson, published by Shire Books, UK, at pages 39-41 it is written a short story of this dress accessory. The original medieval “chatelaine” or “the lady of the castle”, was an essential piece of equipment for ladies of those ages because suspended from the chatelaine’s waist would have been a hook with chains on which ladies carried the keys to the wooden chests, which stored precious, expensive tea and sugar, to prevent theft by their servants. In 1850s the age of rail travels had begun and ladies would wear fabric chatelaine types that could be hung from a hook at the waist or carried by a finger ring. In 1870s the chatelaine had a revival when narrow shirts were fashionable. Chatelaines were made in a variety of materials, mainly silver, silver plate, brass or steel and they consisted of a large central pierced or engraved motif with a hook to attach to the waistband, from which were suspended a number of chains, usually three, five or sometimes seven, to which could be attached useful small accessories, such a scent bottle, pencil, notebook. The later ones mostly carried needlework items: a thimble in a case, a needle-case, a pincushion, and scissors in a sheath………. Chatelaine continued to be worn until the end of the nineteenth century, including the period when full-skirted dresses with a normal waistline were in fashion, but they gradually became heavier and less attractive in designs. Than handbags took over!
So this is the actual and historical background of Queen Sofia’s Sewing Bag and Chatelaine.
Mercedes is right………. The silk fabric used for this bag is a limited edition and once it is gone, it is gone! I will have to find something else, but it won’t be the same.
I really hope to be able to see your wonderful Country one day, since we have already planned for this trip and I might be able to come and see you………. we’ll see. Now I have Mercedes and I feel very committed to start planning about this.
I have to go back to my work and try to get ready for the stage…….
On the meantime I wanted you to know that “YOU MADE MY DAY” and probably my night!
I will print all your messages and I’ll take them with Mercedes article to Rome and I will proudly show my pupils your wonderful words.
Thanks again ……….
Greetings form Italy and love,
Giulia
